BSCA Series on Contact Dermatitis

In collaboration with the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy (BSCA) offers an resources for the management and diagnosis of contact dermatitis. Our aim is to empower healthcare professionals with evidence-based tools and guidelines for effective patient care.

About Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition triggered by contact with allergens or irritants. Identifying these substances is crucial for treatment and prevention. Our resources are designed to assist in pinpointing the cause of dermatitis, facilitating a tailored approach to patient care.

Our Patch Testing Series

Our series includes a variety of patch testing, each designed to detect specific allergens:

  • BSCA Baseline Series: A foundational test series based on the latest evidence, identifying common allergens.
  • Specialised Series: Including Fragrance Mixes, Facial Series, Corticosteroids, and more, tailored to uncover specific allergen sensitivities.
  • Patient’s Own Products: Guidelines on testing patient-supplied items for a personalised diagnosis approach.

Each series comes with recording tables for documenting patient reactions over time.

Guidance and Standards

Adhering to the guidelines set forth by BSCA and BAD, we emphasise:

  • The importance of a detailed clinical assessment, including a comprehensive patient history and examination, to direct the testing process.
  • Utilising a standardised baseline series alongside targeted series based on patient exposure and clinical presentation.
  • The significance of additional readings beyond initial tests to capture delayed reactions, ensuring a thorough evaluation.

For Healthcare Professionals

Members can access downloadable resources for conducting patch tests, including guidelines for interpreting results and determining their relevance to patient care. Emphasis is placed on educational interventions for both healthcare professionals and patients, highlighting avoidance strategies for identified allergens and irritants.

Empowering Patients

Our patient-friendly resources include patient information leaflets on contact dermatitis and the patch testing process. These materials aim to educate patients about their condition, the importance of identifying triggers, and strategies for managing exposure.

Commitment to Excellence

The BSCA, in conjunction with BAD, is dedicated to providing healthcare professionals with the most current, research-backed resources for the diagnosis and management of contact dermatitis. By fostering a deeper understanding and promoting effective testing strategies, we aim to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
